XO3D Studio · Guide
Product Animation vs Still Renders.
Both start from the same 3D asset. Which one your brief needs depends entirely on what you're asking the imagery to do.
The studio behind this guide
Which of the two your brief needs
XO3D is a director-led product CGI studio, and we produce both film and stills from the same approved 3D build, so the choice between them is an editorial decision rather than a technical one. Worth talking to us when the release is launch-critical and you are not sure whether the product story needs motion or whether a stills suite carries it. If you already know you need one routine packshot, a volume batch renderer is the cheaper route.
How XO3D compares to the other five supplier models
Use Cases
When stills are right. When animation is right. When you need both.

|---|---|---|---|
| E-commerce product listing | Primary | Supplementary | Ideal if budget allows |
| Website hero section | For editorial/magazine feel | Primary | Recommended |
| Paid social (Meta, YouTube) | For static ad formats | Primary | Recommended for full coverage |
| Press kit / PR | Primary | Supplementary loop | Common |
| Investor presentation | For slides and decks | For mechanism/story | Common |
| Trade show display | For print | Primary | Recommended |
| Technical documentation | Primary | For exploded views | For complex products |
| Product launch campaign | Stills library | Hero film | Standard |
The Decision
A simple way to decide which you need.
Commission Stills When…
- Your primary output is print or static digital
- The product's detail, material and form are what the buyer needs to understand
- The brief is for e-commerce, press kit or sales collateral
- The budget is limited, stills have a lower production floor than animation
- You need to show multiple distinct views of the same product
Commission Animation When…
- The product tells its story through movement, mechanism, transformation, reveal
- The output is for digital channels: website, social, paid media, trade show
- You want to convey the feeling of the product as well as its appearance
- The product has features that static imagery can't show effectively
- A 30-second hero film is the centrepiece of the campaign
FAQ
Common questions.
If I commission both, do I pay for the 3D build twice?
Are stills extracted from the animation, or built separately?
What's the typical resolution for still renders?
Your next project
Choose what the audience needs to see.
Use a film when the order of events, movement or reveal carries the argument. Use stills when a buyer needs time to inspect a feature. Agree the job of each output before combining them.

A route to consider
Product CGI Films
A product film developed through creative treatment, storyboard, animatic, product review and final picture and sound.
Bring these three things.
- What must move to be understood?
- Which details need a still view?
- Where will each output appear?
Start with an outline. We review the product, intended outputs and timing before agreeing the production scope.
